On Tuesday, March 20, The Washington Post brought together pioneering researchers, business leaders and elected officials for Transformers: Artificial Intelligence, a live news event focused on technological advances that are poised to reshape the way we live and work. We were there as speakers discussed the future of artificial intelligence and the implications of AI for public policy, business and society.

  • Microsoft Executive Vice President Peggy Johnson discussed how technology companies are developing beneficial uses of AI, such as smartphone apps aiding the visually impaired.
  • NASA Chief Technologist Douglas Terrier, Salesforce Senior Vice President Peter Schwartz, and Thomson Reuters Labs Chief Technology Officer Mona Vernon assessed how AI is likely to affect the global job market and how key sectors will need evolve to keep up with the pace of change.
  • IBM Vice President of AI Dario Gill explained how businesses can use AI responsibly and how industries are working to ensure the technology is fair, ethical, transparent and unbiased.
  • OpenAI Strategy and Communications Director Jack Clark, AI Now Institute Co-founder Meredith Whittaker, and University of Southern California Professor Milind Tambe examined the ethical and societal implications of AI.
  • Victoria Espinel, president of the BSA Foundation and president and CEO of BSA, The Software Alliance, discussed how artificial intelligence can be used as a force for good.
